The small town of Capron, Illinois, was named for one of its earliest settlers, John Capron, and has had a working post office since 1861. There must be something to this rural community because the population has grown almost 28 percent since 2020. It could be that housing is almost 45% less than the national average, and overall, it’s about 20% less expensive to live in Capron. The residents here have lived off the land for over 150 years. The city is 100% rural and dotted with many farms and ranches.
Though just a few years old, Burr Oak Acres began in 2018 when a couple of corporate Americans sold their house in the suburbs and settled into a 10-acre farm in Capron. With no experience, they started with a few egg-laying chickens, and today they raise Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats, Bourbon Red Turkeys, Cornish Cross Chickens, and Pekin Ducks. For a farm-to-the-plate experience in your own kitchen, this is the place for the freshest proteins around. Want to accompany that with homegrown fruits and vegetables? Make sure to stop by Van Laar’s Fruit Farm. Grab some farm-fresh apples, strawberries, sweet corn, freshly baked bread, and a rhubarb pie for dessert.
For an even further step back in time, visit RavenStone Castle. This 16th-century castle was built in 2001 by Jose and Rose Michel as their family home. Today, as a bed and breakfast, you can spend some time in a themed room like the Queen Elizabeth, the King Arthur, or the Egyptian suite. Tours are available, and the public is invited to their many events, so don’t miss Tapestries, Tea & Tarts, or Christmas at the Castle.
Enter the 20th century at Poplar Grove Vintage Wings and Wheels Museum. The Waukesha Hangar, built in 1937, is home to the main museum, historic collection, and one-of-a-kind transportation history research library. Be sure to swing by Slim’s Garage and see the 1924 Chevy Truck as well. If the displays here have you itching for more, The Boone County Museum of History can surely scratch it. Opened in 1936, you can enjoy the vintage automobile collection, WW II exhibit, and Civil War artifacts. You can literally take a walk through time at the Tuttle Clarkson Natural Area. The area has never been plowed and has remained almost how it was 150 years ago.
For a day of family fun, head over to the Summerfield Zoo. Many exotic animals here range from Alligator to Zebras, and so many in between. Enjoy the petting zoo and pony rides for the kids. The setting is more intimate than most zoos, so you can get up and personal with some exotics and even take a picture with them.
