Wauconda, IL

Wauconda, Illinois began as a lakeside settlement in the 1830s when Justus Bangs built a cabin along the shores of what is now called Bangs Lake. Originally known by the same name, the town adopted the name Wauconda in the 1840s—a word believed to be of Native American origin, loosely meaning “spirit water.” The village officially incorporated in 1877 and quickly became a popular retreat for city dwellers escaping Chicago’s summer heat. What began as a small resort community has grown into a thriving village of nearly 14,000 residents, all while maintaining the laid-back charm of its lakefront roots. Today, Wauconda’s history is still visible in its downtown architecture, its seasonal festivals, and the ever-present draw of the water.
